An Introduction to Frame Loom Weaving

Thursday 30th April

Step away from the everyday and spend a creative morning learning the gentle, rhythmic craft of frame loom weaving, followed by a Michelin Green Starred lunch in the beautiful surroundings of Pythouse Kitchen Garden.

Ellie Fisher, owner of Elka — a weaving and natural dye studio based in Hampshire — brings many years of teaching experience. This relaxed, hands-on workshop introduces the fundamentals of weaving using natural and recycled fibres, while giving you space to slow down, experiment and enjoy the process. No prior experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.

What’s included

The workshop includes four hours of guided tuition, use of all looms and tools, and a carefully curated selection of materials. You’ll work with naturally dyed linen and recycled cotton yarns, alongside a tactile mix of fibres including rose, bamboo, flax and hemp. You’ll also receive clear, illustrated handouts to take home, so you can continue weaving long after the day ends.

What to expect

Expect a calm, creative day, beautiful materials, and the satisfaction of learning a skill you can return to again and again. We’ll begin with an introduction to the basic principles and language of weaving before moving into practical, hands-on making. By the end of the session, you’ll have created your own small woven piece on a frame loom.

During the workshop we’ll cover:

- Choosing suitable yarns and fibres
- Planning your warp (the vertically aligned threads) and dressing the loom (preparing it for weaving)
- A range of simple weaving techniques, with plenty of time to practise
- Securing your finished piece and removing it from the loom

Group sizes are kept small to ensure individual guidance and a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. This workshop is ideal for complete beginners, as well as those who’ve dabbled before and would enjoy a gentle refresher. There will be an opportunity to purchase your own frame loom (£25) and additional materials at the end of the session. Your handout also includes a comprehensive list of trusted suppliers.
